•Cardinal Pio Laghi, Prefect of the Congregation of Catholic Education, will be the Homilist at the Saint Patrick’s Seminary’s Centennial Anniversary Mass Sunday, September 20, 1998 at 4:15 pm in St. Mary’s Cathedral. A reception follows in Patron’s Hall, lower level of the Church..

•Bishop-elect John C. Wester will be ordained as Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese on Friday, September 18, 1998 at 11 am at St. Mary’s Cathedral. Prayer Group leaders should encourage all members to attend. •Vandals with a slingshot damaged several large panes of glass at St. Mary’s Cathedral recently causing $125,000 damage. During the past year, there have been 18 incidents of vandalism to Catholic Churches in San Francisco according to Maurice Healy, Archdiocesan Director of Communications.

•In Dies Domini, ("The Day of the Lord"), a recent apostolic letter, Pope John Paul II said that Sunday prayer and rest is a human need and a religious obligation. The Pope reaffirmed Church teaching that Catholics must attend Sunday Mass and that other Sunday activities should be in harmony with the sacred character of the day.

•Renew 2000 begins during the week of October 4, 1998. You will be invited to join one of the Small Faith Communities forming in your parish. Meeting weekly for six weeks, they are structured around prayer, Scripture and reflection to help you revitalize your Faith.

•Two TV Shows worth watching: Ethics & Religion NewsWeekly, a half-hour show on PBS Channel 9, Sundays at 2 pm, or visit it at www.pbs.org and Mosaic, produced by the Archdiocese with CBS, Sundays at 6 am on KPIX Channel 5

•The Catholic Distance University is the first Catechetical Institute in the Unites States with approval from the Vatican Congregation for the Clergy to teach the Faith through distance learning. CDU offers programs in adult education, undergraduate college courses and two accredited Master Degree Programs in Religious Studies. •Bishop Anthony M. Pilla of Cleveland, president of the US Bishop's Conference, said that Pope John Paul II’s apostolic letter on the bishops’ conferences was not a restriction but an affirmation that conferences can exercise teaching authority "in their own name when there is unanimity among the bishops or with the ‘recognitio’of the Holy See… clarifies a situation that has been under discussion for more than a decade."

•Fr. Lou Cerulli, (Canada) will celebrate a Mass followed by a Healing Service at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 751 Waverly St., Palo Alto at 7:30 pm, September 17. For more information, call Mary Anne Trojak (650) 494-2496 ext. 15.

•Single Catholics Online http://www.singlecatholics.com is aimed at 18 and older singles who are looking for other serious, loyal to the faith, single Catholics to share life experiences.

•World Rosary Day will be celebrated Oct 31. Prayer Groups and churches who would like to participate in the World Rosary Day by organizing an event in their city can contact rosario@churchforum.or.mx. The plans call for the simultaneous prayer of many rosaries throughout the seven continents.

•Pentecostal Lawyer, Vladimir Ryakhovsky, is helping Russian Catholic parishes and other religious denominations to register under Russia’s new law on religion. His observations of religious persecution as a youth help fuel his fervor for defending the rights of believers.
